History - The Guernsey breed originated in the small island of Guernsey, in the English Channel and just off the coast of France. There is evidence that points to the fact that the modern Guernsey's ancestors were cows from Brittany and Normandy. The Guernsey was first recorded as its own breed in around 1700. Around 1789, imports of other cattle into Guernsey were forbidden to keep the breed pure Guernsey.
Guernsey Calves - Average Guernsey calves start weaning at about 75 kg, or 165 pounds. Guernsey cows can calve at around 22 months of age. This breed reaches reproductive maturity at an early age. The calves are quite big when they are born.
Milk Production - The milk produced from Guernsey cows is high in butterfat and protein and has a slight golden color because of its high amount of beta carotene. Guernsey cows can make larger amounts of their high quality milk even with less feed than other breeds of cow.
